LONDON (Reuters) - A leading fertility expert in the United
States said Wednesday he had used the top-selling male anti-impotence
drug Viagra to help women suffering from infertility.
A specially formulated suppository of the drug made by U.S. pharmaceutical
giant Pfizer was given to four women undergoing fertility treatment
to increase the thickness of the lining of the womb.
Three of the women, who had experienced repeated failures with
IVF treatment, became pregnant and two have had healthy babies.
``We improved the (uterus) lining in all of them and optimized
the lining in three out of the four,'' Dr. Geoffrey Sher, of the
Sher Institute for Reproductive Medicine in Las Vegas, said in
a telephone interview.
``Three out of the four conceived. Two have had babies and
one is due,'' he said.
Sher stressed Viagra did not improve pregnancy rates but his research,
published in the latest edition of the Journal of Human Reproduction,
showed it could help increase the thickness of the lining of the
uterus along with the female hormone estrogen.
Research shows the lining should measure nine millimeters for
IVF to be successful.
Sher said about one in 20 women whom he treats with IVF have the
problem. He estimated that 150,000 women suffer from the condition
in the United States, many without realizing it.
``Viagra could benefit a small group of women. But there is hardly
an IVF program in the world that doesn't have a handful of patients
a year who are not getting pregnant because of the lining problem,''
he said.
``For them it could be a miracle drug if used properly.''
Sher emphasized his findings were preliminary and more study was
needed.
