Back to school

Just like in Japan, school is back in session in America, also. The only difference is that the American school year is just beginning. It begins in the fall and ends in the early summer. Summer vacation doesn't divide the school. It provides the buffer between school years. Good luck to all you students. I hope we will always remember to be a student regardless of whether or not we attend school.

Things you take and experience at school:

lunch box teacher-parent conferences
loose sleeve paper report card
recess graduation ceremony
student government class reunion
study hall group assignment
detention center skipping grades
extra-credit assignments home-room teacher

Express yourself

Wish
& Hope

Do they really both mean the same thing?

Definitions for the American Heritage Dictionary Second College Edition

Wish: To have or feel a wish; want: I wish to know; I wish you were here
Hope: To wish for (something) with exception
Wish is often used to express the desire to have a present situation in a different way.
Hope can not be used this way.
Correct: I hope it doesn't rain tomorrow; I hope I can go to the game next week.
Incorrect: I wish it doesn't rain tomorrow. Correct: I wish I could go to the game next week.

Let's Practice

(Wish) (Hope)
A: Do you know what today is? A: I'm really excited for tomorrow's game.
B: No, what? B: Who's playing?
A: Today is the test day for Eiken.
Did you sign up?
A: The Dodgers and the Yankees
Nomo versus Irabu
B: No, I completely forgot.
I really wanted to take it this time.
I wish I had signed up.
B: How did you get tickets?
You are so lucky. I'm jealous.
I hope it doesn't snow tomorrow.

Wish and hope are very similar. There are a few slight differences. Be careful and remember:

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT! Good luck in school!

SEE YOU!!
